Join CitySwitch and get financial assistance to help combat rising energy bills by assessing and managing your office energy use.

More and more businesses are taking control of their operating costs by getting smarter with their energy use and improving day-to-day workplace actions. To help organisations on this journey, CitySwitch has funding on offer for a limited time to assist businesses in most partnering council areas with getting started with documenting their energy baseline; the essential first step in any action planning process.

CitySwitch helps organisations take this first step. The program supports its members with a range of free resources to assist implementations and deliver savings, including one-to-one support and impartial advice, toolkits, case studies and regular information sessions with other dedicated sustainable leaders.

Receive funding for your energy rating 

Businesses located in the cities of Sydney, Willoughby, Adelaide, Perth and all across the state of Victoria can receive funding towards a NABERS Energy rating for their office tenancy when they join CitySwitch.

This energy rating allows businesses to monitor progress and reliably reduce environmental impact and costs year-on-year. The amount available per business differs for each local government area - for more information about each of the CitySwitch NABERS Grant offerings, download the relevant grant information form.

  • The City of Sydney ratings and assessment grant offers half the cost of a NABERS accredited rating each year for up to two years (up to a maximum value of $10,000 in Year 1 and $5,000 in Year 2) for commercial office tenants and other organisations based within the local government area.   • The City of Melbourne offers all CitySwitch signatories in Victoria access to a rebate for the cost incurred to undertake an accredited NABERS tenant energy rating. For a tenancy of under 20000 square metres there is a maximum rebate of $500 and for a tenancy of over 2000 square metres there is a maximum rebate of $1,000.   • The Willoughby City Council subsidy offers a 50 per cent discount on the services of a selected consultant to conduct an energy audit and/or a NABERS rating assessment for tenancies and base buildings based within the local government area. Contact the program manager to find out more >          

  • The Adelaide City Council rebate offers up to half the cost of a NABERS rating assessment relative to office size (up to $2,500) for organisations based within the local government area who join CitySwitch. Contact the program manager to find out more >

Why get a rating?

NABERS is the national standard rating tool for building energy performance. Obtaining and understanding a NABERS rating enables businesses to focus their efforts on reductions that will deliver strong results. It provides rigour and reportability to data gathered and enables comparisons with other organisations across Australia. CitySwitch financial assistance aims to help organisations reap the environmental and cost benefits of operating in an energy efficient office.

NABERS Energy Ratings - an overview

NABERS Energy rates the energy efficiency of buildings and tenancies from 1 to 6 stars, with 6 stars representing an exceptionally high level of energy efficiency. With the average tenancy performing at 2½ stars, a 4 star commitment means the tenant is at least 20 per cent more efficient than the general commercial tenant market. NABERS ratings benchmark Signatories’ progress in the journey to becoming more energy efficient and are an accountability mechanism of the national program. Find out more about NABERS >

CitySwitch Signatories can claim a 50 per cent reduction off the standard certification fee charged by the Office of Environment and Heritage for obtaining a rating.

CitySwitch Grants - Is my organisation eligible?

Eligibility for financial assistance differs for each participating council (click on the below links for more details). Generally though, your tenancy must:  

  • be located within the cities of Sydney, Willoughby, Adelaide, Perth or anywhere in the state of Victoria
  • sign-up to CitySwitch as a new Signatory
  • complete a baseline NABERS Energy rating assessment once joining
  • submit an application form

CitySwitch Signatory of the Year and New Signatory Awards - category judging criteria

  • Delivering outcomes as demonstrated by an improved or maintained current NABERS Energy rating and achieved energy savings* (up to 28 points)
  • Implementing one or more energy saving initiatives (up to 10 points)
  • Demonstrating leadership by undertaking innovative, creative or progressive office energy efficiency activities (up to 10 points)
  • Engagement of staff/ customers/suppliers and/or stakeholders to educate and create market transformation (up to 10 points)
  • Participation in CitySwitch local program activities (up to 10 points).
Note, new Signatories submitting for New Signatory of the Year Award need only complete an indicative rating – all other submissions must be accredited.

CitySwitch Partnership of the Year Award - category judging criteria

Eligibility Criteria

Submitted projects should:

  • Involve more than one registered company 
  • Demonstrate that they are  innovative and over and above “business as usual”
  • Demonstrate that they catalyse “market transformation” and or “address a market barrier”
  • Deliver a reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions within the built environment 

Judging Criteria

  • Delivering outcomes as demonstrated by an improved or maintained current NABERS Energy rating and achieved energy savings* (up to 14 points)
  • Implementing one or more energy saving initiatives (up to 10 points)
  • Demonstrating leadership by undertaking innovative, creative or progressive office energy efficiency activities (up to 17 points)
  • Engagement of staff/ customers/suppliers and/or stakeholders to educate and create market transformation (up to 17 points)
  • Participation in CitySwitch local program activities (up to 10 points)
  • The submitting entity MUST be a CitySwitch Signatory
Note, Signatories submitting for the Partnership of the Year Award may submit an accredited NABERS tenancy, whole building or base building rating.

It’s easy and free to join the program. Your good-will commitment to the program is an acknowledgement of the business sector’s role in
contributing to environmental sustainability and your intention to reduce your own energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.

As part of this, Signatories to the program commit to achieve an accredited NABERS Energy tenancy rating (between 4 and 6 stars) and
work with CitySwitch to improve their tenancy’s environmental performance.
